Binomial Nomenclature

定义

The two-part Latin naming system (genus + species) used to uniquely identify every bird species.

详细说明

Introduced by Carl Linnaeus in 'Systema Naturae' (1758), binomial nomenclature gives each species a unique two-part Latinized name: genus (capitalized) + species epithet (lowercase), both italicized. For example, the Common Swift is Apus apus. Subspecies receive a third name (trinomial nomenclature). The system allows unambiguous communication regardless of language and provides information about evolutionary relationships through the genus grouping.
