Convergent evolution has produced some striking parallels in birds: unrelated swifts and swallows have evolved similar streamlined bodies and wide gapes for aerial insect catching; unrelated cormorants and darters have evolved wing-drying behavior and similar fishing methods; New World vultures and Old World vultures both evolved bald heads and soaring flight independently. DNA evidence is the primary tool for distinguishing convergence from true evolutionary relatedness.
