<birdfyi-bird slug="raggiana-bird-of-paradise"></birdfyi-bird>Papua New Guinea placed the Raggiana Bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea raggiana) on its flag and coat of arms, making it the national bird. Males carry a yellow crown, an emerald-green throat and cascading orange-red flank plumes; females are brown with rufous underparts, and both have a stout, slightly curved blue-grey bill. Males assemble at traditional display trees, where they hang upside down and shake the flank plumes while giving harsh buzzy calls and explosive wailing, producing a lek that is loud and chaotic. The species occupies tropical rainforest and forest edge in New Guinea, from the lowlands to mid-montane elevations. Alfred Russel Wallace described it in 1873. Adults measure about 34 cm and 260 g.

The raggiana bird-of-paradise is the national bird of Papua New Guinea, featured on the national flag and coat of arms. Males gather at traditional display trees to perform elaborate courtship dances, hanging upside down and shaking their spectacular flank plumes. Alfred Russel Wallace first described the species in 1873.
