Males carry a yellow crown, an emerald-green throat and cascading orange-red flank plumes; females are brown with rufous underparts, and both have a stout, slightly curved blue-grey bill. Males assemble at traditional display trees, where they hang upside down and shake the flank plumes while giving harsh buzzy calls and explosive wailing, producing a lek that is loud and chaotic. The species occupies tropical rainforest and forest edge in New Guinea, from the lowlands to mid-montane elevations. Alfred Russel Wallace described it in 1873. Adults measure about 34 cm and 260 g.
