The Madagascar Crested Ibis (Lophotibis cristata) is the sole member of its genus and one of the most distinctive members of the family Threskiornithidae, endemic to the island of Madagascar. It is a medium to large ibis measuring 50 cm in length, notable for a long, shaggy white crest that erupts from the nape and cascades down the back of the neck, contrasting sharply with the rufous-brown body plumage. The wings are white, creating a striking pattern in flight, while the face is bare and red or orange-red. The bill is moderately long and slightly decurved, and the legs are pinkish-red.
Two subspecies are recognized: the nominate Lophotibis cristata cristata, found in humid eastern forests, and L. c. urschi, occurring in drier deciduous forests of western Madagascar. The species inhabits primary and secondary forest, forest edges, and wooded areas, making it unusual among ibises in being primarily a forest-dwelling bird rather than an open-water wetland species. It occurs from sea level up to about 2,000 meters in the eastern rainforest zone.
Foraging takes place on the forest floor and in leaf litter, where the bird probes with its bill for earthworms, insects, grubs, lizards, frogs, crabs, and other small animals. It is more terrestrial in its foraging behavior than most ibises and is well adapted to life in dense forest understory. The species is generally shy and secretive, often detected by its loud, far-carrying calls — a series of harsh, crow-like notes — before it is seen.
Breeding occurs in tree cavities or platform nests built in trees, typically at low to moderate heights in the forest. The clutch usually contains two to three eggs. Both sexes contribute to incubation and chick-rearing, consistent with the generally biparental care typical of the family. The species is generally solitary or found in pairs outside the breeding season rather than forming the large flocks typical of many other ibises.
The Madagascar Crested Ibis is classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, threatened by ongoing deforestation across Madagascar, hunting, and trapping. Forest loss for slash-and-burn agriculture and charcoal production continues to reduce and fragment its habitat, making conservation of Madagascar's remaining forest ecosystems critical to this species' survival.
