Tanım
The vocal organ of birds located at the junction of the trachea and bronchi, enabling complex song production.
Ayrıntılı Açıklama
Unlike the larynx of mammals, the avian syrinx sits at the bronchial bifurcation, allowing independent control of each bronchial half. This gives songbirds (oscines) the ability to produce two pitches simultaneously. The syrinx contains vibrating membranes (tympaniform membranes) whose tension is altered by specialized syringeal muscles — oscines have up to nine pairs, giving them extraordinary vocal complexity.
