Ausführliche Erläuterung
Anders als der Kehlkopf der Säugetiere sitzt die Syrinx an der bronchialen Gabelung, was eine unabhängige Steuerung jeder Bronchialhälfte erlaubt. Dies verleiht Singvögeln (Oscines) die Fähigkeit, zwei Tonhöhen gleichzeitig zu erzeugen. Die Syrinx enthält vibrierende Membranen (Paukenhäute), deren Spannung von spezialisierten Syrinxmuskeln verändert wird — Oscines besitzen bis zu neun Muskelpaare, was ihnen außergewöhnliche stimmliche Komplexität verleiht.
