Tanım
Small contour feathers that cover the bases of the flight feathers on the wings and tail.
Ayrıntılı Açıklama
Coverts are organized in overlapping rows: greater, median, and lesser coverts on both upper and lower wing surfaces. They smooth airflow over the wing, reduce drag at the base of flight feathers, and in many species form colored wing bars that are conspicuous in flight. Greater coverts often retain juvenile characteristics into the first winter, and the boundary between old juvenile and fresh adult coverts is a useful aging criterion for many passerines.
