Habita zonas húmidas de savana, campos inundados e rios de planície em grande parte do interior da América do Sul, do Brasil ao norte da Argentina e Bolívia. Muitas vezes é visto empoleirado em árvores acima da água. Vive em pares ou pequenos grupos ao longo do ano.
