O ganso-de-testa-branca é um ganso cinzento médio com uma característica faixa branca na frente da cabeça e barras pretas irregulares no ventre. Tem distribuição circumolar na tundra ártica onde cria, hibernando mais ao sul. As duas subespécies principais diferem no tamanho do bico e hibernam em diferentes regiões. Alimenta-se de plantas de tundra durante a criação e de pasto e culturas nas suas áreas de hibernada. É uma espécie cinegética amplamente caçada.

É um dos poucos pássaros com uma distribuição tão disjunta. Tem coloração castanho-avermelhada rica com flancos estriados de branco e creme e penas traseiras estriadas.
