É um dos poucos patos flightless do mundo, adaptado à vida em ilhas oceânicas isoladas. Alimenta-se de invertebrados, sementes e algas marinhas. A população total é estimada em apenas algumas centenas de indivíduos. Classificado como Em Perigo pela UICN, protegido em ilhas livres de predadores.
