O êider-de-óculos é um pato marinho do Ártico notável pelas marcações faciais brancas em forma de óculos em ambos os sexos. Os machos têm plumagem principalmente branca com a traseira preta. Cria em pântanos de tundra no Alaska e na Sibéria. Durante o inverno, forma grandes concentrações em buracos no gelo marinho de Bering. O seu habitat de inverno foi descoberto apenas nos anos 1990. É classificado como ameaçado devido a declínios populacionais não explicados.

Male has white back and black breast with pale sage-green head framed by large white goggle-like spectacles edged black. Female mottled tawny-brown with faint spectacle outline.
Habitat & Range

Breeds on coastal tundra of western and northern Alaska. Winters along the Bering Sea coast from Alaska to Kamchatka. Largely sedentary.
Diet & Feeding
Dives for bivalves, crustaceans, and aquatic insects in shallow Arctic coastal and freshwater habitats. Insects predominate in summer.
