Sobre
O pato-especulado é um pato grande dos Andes e da Patagónia sul-americana. Os machos têm crista vermelha pequena e plumagem castanho-mosqueada com grande espelho alar branco brilhante. Habita zonas húmidas andinas de alta altitude e lagos patagónicos, rios e costas marinhas. Existem duas subespécies: a andina e a patagónica. É um pato ativo e frequentemente visto em pares ou pequenos grupos. Tem voz complexa usada em exibições territoriais.

Plumagem
Brown body with dark streaking; long pointed crest on hindcrown. Face and throat pale with dark eye patch. Iridescent purple-bronze speculum bordered white. Bill and legs grayish. Sexes similar. Andean and coastal.
Habitat & Range
Fast-flowing Andean rivers, lakes, and puna wetlands from sea level to 4,500 m in Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, and the Falkland Islands. Occupies both coastal and high-altitude wetland habitats.

Breeds across Eurasia; winters in sub-Saharan Africa. One of the most abundant Palearctic ducks on the African wintering grounds.

Feeds on seeds and aquatic invertebrates; dabbles in ponds and marshes; diet more invertebrate-heavy in breeding season.
