O pato-olho-de-ouro é um pato mergulhador médio notável pelos seus olhos amarelo-dourados brilhantes. Os machos têm cabeça verde-preta iridescente com remendo branco redondo perto do bico. Cria em buracos de árvore em florestas boreais junto a lagos de água limpa. Os filhotes saltam dos buracos do ninho pouco depois de eclodir. Hiberna em costas marinhas e grandes corpos de água dulcícola. O som de assobio dos machos com as asas durante o voo é inconfundível.
