O ganso-de-pescoço-vermelho é um ganso pequeno e marcante com padrão de coloração elaborado de castanho-avermelhado, branco e preto. Cria em tundra siberiana ártica, muitas vezes aninhando perto de falcões e corujas-das-neves para proteção. Hiberna principalmente nas costas do Mar Negro, Mar Cáspio e no nordeste de África. A espécie é classificada como ameaçada, com declínios acentuados da população nos últimos anos devido a alterações no uso da terra nos seus locais de hibernada.

Unmistakable; vivid chestnut-red patch on face and breast bordered by white stripes. Black crown, back, wings, and belly. White flank stripe and undertail. Compact and striking. Sexes similar.
Habitat & Range
Breeds on river-terrace tundra in northwestern Siberia, often near Peregrine or Rough-legged Buzzard nests for protection. Winters on agricultural steppes and lake margins around the Black Sea and Caspian Sea.
