Sobre
O pato-islandez é um grande pato mergulhador de áreas subárticas. Os machos têm cabeça verde-preta iridescente, dorso cinzento finamente barrado e flancos brancos. Cria em lagos e pântanos da tundra e taiga no Hemisfério Norte. Hiberna em costas marinhas e grandes lagos. É ligeiramente maior do que o semelhante pato-bastardo, do qual se distingue pelo tamanho do cabeço e padrão da cabeça. É um pato cinegético com populações estáveis.

Plumagem
Males have glossy green-black rounded head; white flanks and belly; black breast and undertail; gray back. Yellow eye. Bill blue-gray. Females dark brown with white face patch around bill. Longer white wing stripe than Lesser.
Habitat & Range
Breeds on tundra and boreal lakes in the Arctic and subarctic across Eurasia and North America. Winters in large numbers on coastal bays, estuaries, and large lakes in temperate regions.
