O pato malhado é um pato dabbling residente das zonas húmidas costeiras do Golfo do México e da Flórida. É o único pato dabbling não migratório a criar no sul da Flórida. Apresenta uma coloração castanha mosqueada com cabeça mais pálida e bico amarelo-esverdeado nos machos. Habita pântanos de água salgada e salobra, zonas húmidas costeiras e arrozais. As duas subespécies principais são o pato malhado da Flórida e o pato malhado do Golfo.

Rich mottled brown plumage with buff-edged feathers and pale buff head and throat. Dark crown and eye stripe. Iridescent blue speculum with white border. Yellow-orange bill. Sexes similar. Resembles non-breeding Mallard.

Coastal freshwater and brackish marshes, wet prairies, and gulf coast wetlands in Florida and along the Gulf of Mexico coast to Texas. Non-migratory year-round resident. Threatened by Mallard hybridization.
