O pato-dos-kerguélen é um pato dabbling pequeno restrito às ilhas subantárticas de Kerguélen e Crozet no Oceano Índico sul. Assemelha-se a uma versão menor do pato-real mas com plumagem mais escura. Existe como espécie isolada nestas ilhas remotas. Enfrenta ameaças de ratos e gatos introduzidos que predam os ninhos e filhotes. As populações são pequenas e limitadas a estas ilhas remotas, tornando a espécie vulnerável a qualquer catástrofe local.

Plumagem
Brown, mottled plumage; head brown with pale cheeks. Pointed tail; males slightly longer-tailed. Grayish bill. Speculum bronze-green. Sexes similar with modest dimorphism. Subantarctic island endemic; two subspecies.
Habitat & Range
Restricted to the sub-Antarctic Kerguelen and Crozet archipelagos. Inhabits freshwater streams, ponds, and coastal wetlands. Largely terrestrial for a duck; forages on land among tussock grasses.
