Mostly dull gray-brown; head paler gray. Distinctive pale blue wing patch conspicuous in flight. Underparts slightly paler. Bill and legs pinkish-gray. Sexes similar. Endemic to Ethiopian highlands.

비행 시 특유의 엷은 청회색 날개 반점이 보이는 중형 회갈색 기러기 유사 오리. 에티오피아 고원 고유종. 산악 하천 인근 짧은 풀밭에서 풀을 뜯는다. 단혼성; 쌍은 영구적이다. 농업 집약화와 과도한 방목으로 위협받는다.

가장 잘 알려진 야생 오리로 체장 50–65cm이며, 수컷은 광택 있는 녹색 머리와 노란 부리, 자주빛 갈색 가슴, 흰색 목 고리를 갖는다. 북반구 전역과 호주에 귀화하여 온대 내지 아열대 습지, 호수, 강, 도시 공원에 서식한다. 잡식성으로 식물, 곤충, 작은 어류를 먹는다. 관심 필요 종이다.
