미국 남서부와 멕시코 북서부 소노라 사막과 건조한 관목지대 고유종인 중형 메추라기. 수컷은 끝이 앞으로 휘어진 검은 깃털 장식을 가지며, 회색과 황갈색 몸통에 비늘무늬 배가 특징이다. 씨앗, 어린 새싹, 곤충을 먹으며, 물을 얻기 위해 선인장 열매에 의존하기도 한다.
