メキシコのバハ・カリフォルニア・スール州南端固有の中型ハチドリ(9〜10cm)。緑色の羽毛に赤褐色の胸と白い眼帯を持つ。乾燥した低木地とトゲのある林の蜜食者。ハンガリーの博物学者ジョン・ザンタスにちなんで命名されたバハ・カリフォルニア固有種。

Ruby-throated Hummingbird

The ruby-throated hummingbird is the only breeding hummingbird in eastern North America. These tiny birds beat their wings about 53 times per second and can fly backwards, sideways, and even briefly upside down. They make an extraordinary non-stop 800 km crossing of the Gulf of Mexico during migration.
