A medium-large Phasianidae pheasant (~1.02 kg) of lowland dipterocarp forest in peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra. Males are rufous-chestnut with a distinctive bare red orbital patch; lacks a crest. Forages on seeds, fruits, and invertebrates on the forest floor. Critically Endangered from severe lowland deforestation.

Male glossy blue-black; bright cinnamon-orange lower back and rump diagnostic; no crest; red orbital skin. Female brown with black scaling on upperparts and white streaks below; cinnamon rump duller than male.
