Under the IUCN Red List criteria, a species qualifies as Endangered if its population has declined by 50-70% over ten years (or three generations), its range is severely restricted and declining, or its predicted extinction probability exceeds 20% within 20 years. Currently over 1,500 bird species are classified as Endangered or Critically Endangered.
