A medium-large cracid (~1 kg) of family Cracidae, with olive-brown plumage and a bare red throat. Endemic to the Baudó and western Andes of Colombia and possibly northwestern Ecuador. Inhabits humid lowland and foothill forests up to 1,200 m. Feeds on fruits and seeds in the forest canopy. Endangered due to severe deforestation in the Chocó biodiversity hotspot and hunting pressure.

Dark brownish-black overall; throat red-skinned; neck and upper breast finely streaked white; lower underparts rufous-chestnut; tail long and dark; white streaking extends onto mantle.
Habitat & Range
Répartition géographique
Resident in the western Andes of Colombia in the Baudó Mountains. Found in humid foothill and montane forest, 100-1,700 m.
Diet & Feeding
Frugivorous; eats fruits, berries, seeds, and leaves in Chocó rainforests of Colombia and Ecuador. Diet poorly known.

Produces a loud, resonant honking cackle and wing-whirring display flights. Calls carry through Colombian and Ecuadorian Chocó rainforest; wing-whirring display is dramatic.
