A distinctive Phasianidae partridge (~315 g) endemic to montane forests of Borneo, especially on Mount Kinabalu and the Crocker Range. Males bear a vivid crimson head contrasting with dark brown body plumage. Ground-dwelling; feeds on seeds and small invertebrates. Largely confined to forest above 900 m. Least Concern.

Plumage
Striking male with vivid crimson-red head contrasting with black body; white belly with black scaling; red legs. Female duller: brown where male is black, orange-buff head lacks brilliant crimson of male.
Habitat & Range
Répartition géographique
Endemic to Borneo; resident of hill and lower montane forest in Sabah, Sarawak, and Kalimantan, mainly at 300–1,500 m.
Diet & Feeding
Forages in Bornean hill forest for seeds, fruits, and invertebrates; scratches leaf litter on steep slopes.

Chant
Loud, repeated 'wee-WEE-oo' whistle from Bornean montane forest floor; melodic and pure. Pairs occasionally duet. Alarm is sharp staccato cackle. Contact calls low clucking.
