A large hummingbird (12-13 cm) found in humid foothill forests of eastern Ecuador and Peru at 400-1,400 m. Green plumage. Nectarivore of Andean foothill forest undergrowth. Named after the city of Villavicencio. An uncommon species.

Feeds on floral nectar in Napo lowland forest, hovering at large Heliconia. Supplements with insects and spiders.
