Las plumas principales de la cola utilizadas para dirigir, frenar y equilibrar el vuelo.
Explicación detallada
Las rectrices suelen sumar entre 10 y 16, dispuestas simétricamente a cada lado de la cola. Se fijan al pigostilo mediante fuertes ligamentos y están controladas por músculos caudales intrínsecos. Durante el frenado se abren en abanico para aumentar la resistencia; en los giros cerrados actúan como un timón. Muchas especies han desarrollado rectrices alargadas u ornamentadas para la exhibición, como en los pavos reales y las aves del paraíso.
