Great Crested Grebe
El somormujo lavanco (unos 900 g) es la mayor de las zampullines europeas, famosa por sus espectaculares rituales de cortejo, en los que la pareja se mueve sincronizada frente a frente agitando la cabeza y ofreciéndose mates de algas. Tiene un prominente penacho y, en época de cría, un collar castaño y negro alrededor de la cara. Bucea con maestría persiguiendo peces. Las crías son transportadas a menudo sobre el dorso de los adultos entre el plumaje.

Inhabits small freshwater ponds, ditches, and marshes from the southern USA through Central and South America to northern Argentina. Feeds on small fish and aquatic invertebrates.
