Brown above with pale buff shaft streaks; white throat bordered by buff-brown collar; pale buff underparts with brown flank streaking; yellowish bill. Sexes similar; female lacks bold white throat contrast.

Males (peacocks) have iridescent blue-green plumage and an enormous train of elongated upper tail coverts with eye-spots. Females (peahens) are brown and cryptically patterned.
