About These Birds

Bulwer's Petrel

26–28 cm, wingspan 68–73 cm. All-dark chocolate-brown with long wedge-shaped tail; pale diagonal wing-bar. Breeds subtropical Atlantic and Pacific islands; migrates to tropical oceans. Buoyant, weaving flight close to water. Feeds on squid and fish at night.

Balearic Shearwater

30–38 cm. Brown above; variably dirty-white to brown below; often shows brown smudging on flanks. Breeds only Balearic Islands, Spain. Critically Endangered with fewer than 3,000 pairs; faces extinction. Migrates to NE Atlantic; threatened by predators, fishing bycatch, and tourist development.
