About These Birds
Flesh-footed Shearwater
41–45 cm, wingspan 99–107 cm. All-dark sooty-brown with pale flesh-coloured feet and yellowish bill base. Breeds southern Indian Ocean islands and SW Australia; ranges to North Pacific. Near Threatened; bycatch concern. Feeds on fish and squid; follows fishing vessels.
Soft-plumaged Petrel
32–37 cm, wingspan 83–95 cm. Grey above; white below with a distinctive dark partial breast-band and dark-streaked face. Breeds Tristan, Gough, and southern Indian Ocean islands. Ranges widely in Southern Ocean. Feeds on fish and squid; arcs steeply in strong winds.
