About These Birds

Flesh-footed Shearwater

41–45 cm, wingspan 99–107 cm. All-dark sooty-brown with pale flesh-coloured feet and yellowish bill base. Breeds southern Indian Ocean islands and SW Australia; ranges to North Pacific. Near Threatened; bycatch concern. Feeds on fish and squid; follows fishing vessels.

Southern Giant Petrel

86–99 cm, wingspan 185–205 cm; largest procellariid. Bill massive, pale horn with greenish tip. Two morphs: brown-and-white and rare all-white. Breeds Antarctic and subantarctic islands; ranges widely in Southern Ocean. Scavenges carrion and kills penguins; dominant at seal carcasses.
