A small grouse (~335 g) of family Phasianidae, similar to Hazel Grouse but with more chestnut tones. Endemic to montane forests of central China, including Gansu, Sichuan, and Qinghai. Inhabits dense broadleaved and coniferous montane forest at 1,500–4,000 m. Feeds on seeds, buds, and berries. Near Threatened due to restricted range, logging pressure, and limited population data.

Similar to Hazel Grouse; finely vermiculated grey-brown above; male has black throat bordered white; underparts white with chestnut barring; prominent red eye-comb; tail grey with black subterminal band.
Habitat & Range
Distribución geográfica
Endemic to the mountains and forests of Gansu, Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Qinghai in China. Found in dense coniferous forest at 2,000-4,000 m.
Diet & Feeding
Eats buds, catkins, berries, and seeds in Chinese coniferous and mixed forests. Diet similar to Hazel Grouse; poorly documented.
