A medium-sized partridge (~260 g) of family Phasianidae, with reddish-orange throat, dark brown upperparts, and scaly underparts. Endemic to the montane forests of Taiwan at 500–2,800 m elevation. Forages on the forest floor for seeds, berries, and invertebrates. Least Concern; Taiwan's mountain forests are well protected, supporting stable populations of this island endemic.

Brown above streaked black and buff; bare red around eye; throat pinkish-buff with dark scaling; breast grey with chestnut mottling; flanks grey streaked white. Endemic to Taiwan; moderate patterning.

Endemic to Taiwan at 200-2,000 m. Found in subtropical and montane forest. Largely resident.

Forages on floor of Taiwanese montane forests for seeds, invertebrates, and small fruits. Scratches leaf litter in pairs.

Clear two-syllable whistle 'kwee-OO' rising then falling; repeated steadily for minutes from Taiwanese mountain forest. Alarm produces sharp 'kek' notes; pairs duet at dawn chorus.
