A national symbol of Taiwan, this Phasianidae pheasant (~1.16 kg) inhabits dense temperate forests at 1,800–3,300 m. Males are iridescent blue-black with white wing bars and a long barred tail. Feeds on seeds, berries, ferns, and invertebrates. Listed as Taiwan's protected bird; Least Concern.

Male iridescent blue-black with white shaft streaks on wings forming bold white spots; long dark-barred tail; red facial wattle. Female warm brown with buff shaft streaks and dark brown barring throughout.
