La tórtola común (unos 150 g) tiene el característico arrullo ronroneante que durante siglos fue el emblema del amor fiel en la literatura y la Biblia. Ha sufrido el mayor declive de cualquier ave migratoria en Europa: sus poblaciones han caído hasta un 95% en Gran Bretaña y más del 78% en toda Europa en las últimas décadas. Las causas son la pérdida de plantas silvestres productoras de semillas —su alimento principal— y la caza excesiva en las zonas de migración mediterráneas.
