El charrán común (unos 125 g) es el charrán más extendido del mundo, que se reproduce en colonias costeras e insulares desde el Ártico hasta los trópicos. Con el pico rojo con punta negra, el gorro negro y las partes inferiores grisáceas, es elegante y acrobático. Se alimenta lanzándose en picado al agua para capturar pequeños peces. Migra largas distancias al sur en invierno. Monógamo durante muchos años, los individuos pueden vivir más de 25 años y siguen criando fielmente.
