La gaviota atlántica (unos 1,6 kg) es la gaviota más grande del mundo, con un pico masivo y el dorso negro intenso. Es un depredador ápex en las colonias de aves marinas, capaz de tragar enteras aves del tamaño de una pardela o un frailecillo. Habita costas del Atlántico Norte, desde el noreste de Estados Unidos hasta el norte de Europa. Bastante territorial, defiende agresivamente su territorio de cría. Las poblaciones han crecido en el siglo XX aprovechando los vertederos y las pesquerías.
