A medium Phasianidae spurfowl (~457 g) of montane forest edges and highland grassland across equatorial Africa. Distinctive scaly pattern on the breast from dark feather centres. Pairs forage on the ground for seeds and invertebrates in bamboo and montane forest margins. Widespread in upland Africa; Least Concern.

Resident of moist highland forest, bamboo, and scrub in Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and DR Congo, mainly above 800 m.
