La perdiz pardilla (unos 400 g) es una gallinácea campestre característica de los paisajes agrícolas abiertos de Europa y Asia central. Pardo grisácea con herrumbre en la cara y el cuello, los machos tienen una mancha en herradura castaña en el pecho. Las familias —llamadas 'coveys'— permanecen unidas buena parte del otoño e invierno. Las poblaciones han colapsado en gran parte de Europa occidental por la intensificación agrícola y la pérdida de hábitat. Es una ave de caza tradicional muy valorada.

Native to farmland, hedgerows, and open grassland from Britain east through Europe to Kazakhstan; widely introduced in North America and elsewhere.
