La gaviota hiperbórea (unos 1,3 kg) es una de las gaviotas más grandes, que habita las costas árticas. A diferencia de la mayoría de las gaviotas, su manto es blanco o gris muy pálido con las puntas de las alas blancas, sin las marcas negras características. Los jóvenes son de color crema o café con leche. Nidifica en acantilados y costas del Ártico y migra al sur en invierno. Es un depredador y carroñero oportunista en las colonias de otras aves marinas. Puede vivir más de 20 años.
