La gaviota sombría (unos 800 g) tiene el dorso muy oscuro, casi negro en las formas nórdicas, lo que la distingue de la gaviota argéntea. Se reproduce en colonias a lo largo de las costas atlánticas de Europa, desde Islandia hasta la Península Ibérica. Algunas poblaciones son migratorias de largo alcance, invernando en África occidental. Es una especie variable con múltiples subespecies que los taxónomos debaten continuamente. Su dieta es tan variada como la de otras gaviotas grandes.
