La pagaza piconegra (unos 190 g) se distingue de otras charranes por su pico negro robusto, su corona negra y sus partes inferiores blancas. A diferencia de la mayoría de los charranes, que se lanzan en picado al agua a por peces, caza insectos, lagartos y otros pequeños animales en zonas abiertas, y con frecuencia roba alimento a otras aves. Tiene una distribución prácticamente cosmopolita, pero las poblaciones son fragmentadas y en declive en muchas regiones.
