El colimbo chico (unos 1,5 kg) es el colimbo más pequeño y uno de los más comunes del Holártico. En plumaje nupcial tiene un llamativo parche rojo en la garganta. Se reproduce en lagos de la tundra y migra a las costas en invierno. Como todos los colimbos, es un buceador extraordinario capaz de alcanzar profundidades de más de 60 metros. Su cuerpo hidrodinámico está diseñado para la natación, lo que le hace torpe en tierra. El cuello delgado lo distingue de otras especies.
