El colimbo grande (unos 4,5 kg) es el símbolo de la naturaleza salvaje de Norteamérica, famoso por sus llamadas trémulas y lamentos fantasmagóricos en los lagos boscosos. Sus ojos rojos están adaptados para ver bajo el agua, donde persigue peces con gran agilidad gracias a sus poderosas patas situadas muy atrás en el cuerpo. Esta posición las hace casi incapaces de caminar en tierra, por lo que solo suben a tierra para nidificar. En invierno migran a las costas.
