La codorniz común (unos 90 g) es la única gallinácea migratoria de Europa, que a pesar de sus reducidas alas realiza migraciones transsaharianas. Muy críptica y difícil de observar, se detecta casi exclusivamente por el reclamo del macho, un inconfundible 'pit-pit-luit'. Habita campos de cereales, pastizales y herbazales. Las poblaciones han disminuido en gran parte de Europa por los cambios en las prácticas agrícolas. Fue una especie muy cazada, apreciada tanto por su carne como por su uso en peleas de codornices.
