El arao aliblanco (unos 400 g) es un alcid del Atlántico Norte con plumaje negro intenso y conspicuas manchas blancas en las alas durante el verano. El interior de la boca es de un vivo color rojo carmesí, visible cuando llama. A diferencia de otros alcidos que pasan el invierno mar adentro, el arao aliblanco permanece cerca de la costa durante todo el año, buceando junto a los fondos rocosos para capturar peces y crustáceos. En invierno muda a un plumaje moteado blanco y negro.
