A small, tame grouse (~469 g) of the family Phasianidae endemic to boreal coniferous forests of North America. Males display a vivid red eye comb. Highly specialized on spruce and pine needles for winter food. Ground-nesting; solitary outside breeding. Least Concern.

Male dark charcoal-grey with black throat and breast bordered by white spots; flanks barred white; red superciliary comb. Female intricately barred tawny-brown, black, and white with buffy undertones.

Resident of spruce and coniferous forests across boreal North America, from Alaska east to Newfoundland and south through the Rockies.

Highly specialized on spruce and fir needles year-round; eats berries, fungi, and invertebrates in summer months.
