Quetzal

Der Quetzal galt den Maya und Azteken als göttlich und wurde mit der gefiederten Schlangengottheit Quetzalcoatl in Verbindung gebracht. Sein schillernd grünes Gefieder und die langen Schwanzfedern machen ihn zu einem der schönsten Vögel der Welt. Die Landeswährung Guatemalas ist nach diesem Vogel benannt.

Schuhschnabel

Der Schuhschnabel ist wegen seines urzeitlichen Erscheinungsbilds und seines gewaltigen Schnabels einer der begehrtesten Vögel für Vogelbeobachter in Afrika. Er kann stundenlang reglos verharren, bevor er nach vorne stößt, um Beute mit seinem riesigen Schnabel zu ergreifen. Trotz einer Körpergröße von über einem Meter wiegt der Schuhschnabel dank seiner hohlen Knochen vergleichsweise wenig.
