Er ist der Nationalvogel Israels und spielt in der Mythologie von der ägyptischen Antike bis zum Koran eine bedeutende Rolle. Die Nester des Wiedehopfs sondern ein übel riechendes Sekret ab, das Fressfeinde abschreckt.
Schuhschnabel
Der Schuhschnabel ist wegen seines urzeitlichen Erscheinungsbilds und seines gewaltigen Schnabels einer der begehrtesten Vögel für Vogelbeobachter in Afrika. Er kann stundenlang reglos verharren, bevor er nach vorne stößt, um Beute mit seinem riesigen Schnabel zu ergreifen. Trotz einer Körpergröße von über einem Meter wiegt der Schuhschnabel dank seiner hohlen Knochen vergleichsweise wenig.
